Best GTA DriveTest Centres for Your G2 Test (2026 Pass Rates)
Let's be honest. You've spent months practicing. You've done the three-point turns, survived parallel parking, and white-knuckled your way through highway merges. The last thing you want is to fail your G2 because you picked the wrong test centre.
Here's the thing most people don't realize — where you take your G2 test matters almost as much as how prepared you are.
The GTA has some of the lowest pass rates in all of Ontario. And that's not your fault. It's busy roads, complex routes, and a lot of traffic that makes things harder than they need to be. But if you know the numbers, you can make a smarter choice.
The GTA DriveTest Pass Rates (Updated March 2026)
Here's what the data actually says for both G and G2 pass rates at every GTA-area centre:
- Brampton — G2: 58% G: 58%
- Toronto Downsview — G2: 58% G: 60%
- Toronto Etobicoke — G2: 59% G: 61%
- Newmarket — G2: 63% G: 61%
- Toronto Metro East — G2: 63% G: 63%
- Mississauga — G2: 64% G: 63%
- Toronto Port Union — G2: 62% G: 66%
- Oshawa — G2: 66% G: 69%
- Burlington — G2: 70% G: 69%
- Oakville — G2: 68% G: 70%
Pass rate updated March 2026.
More than 4 in 10 people fail at Brampton, Downsview, and Etobicoke. That's not a small risk on a test you've been building toward for months.
The Honest Breakdown: Which GTA Centre Should You Pick?
Brampton The toughest in the GTA.
58% for both G and G2. If you live in Brampton you already know what the roads are like. Add test-day nerves on top of heavy traffic and complex intersections and you've got a genuinely difficult environment. If you have any flexibility at all, consider driving to a different centre.
Toronto Downsview Hard. Skip if you can.
58% G2, 60% G. Downsview is the default centre for a lot of North York and York region drivers. The routes take you through some of Toronto's busiest streets with tight intersections and aggressive traffic. The pass rate reflects that. If you're in that area, even making the trip to Newmarket adds a few percentage points in your favour.
Toronto Etobicoke Also rough.
59% G2, 61% G. The west end traffic around Kipling and Bloor makes this one of the harder environments in the city. Good prepared drivers fail here not because they can't drive but because the conditions pile up on you.
Toronto Metro East Best option if you're staying in the city.
63% for both. If you're in Scarborough or the east end and you're not willing to travel, Metro East is your best local choice. Still not great odds but noticeably better than the other Toronto centres.
Mississauga Similar to the Toronto centres.
64% G2, 63% G. Routes can involve highway sections and busy arterials. Not impossible but not where you want to be if you have options.
Toronto Port Union Slightly better than Downsview.
62% G2, 66% G. Port Union sits at the eastern edge of Toronto near Kingston Road. The routes are a bit more manageable than Downsview or Etobicoke but still well below the provincial average.
Newmarket Underrated option for North York and Richmond Hill drivers.
63% G2, 61% G. If you're north of the city, Newmarket is a real alternative to Downsview. The roads are calmer, the routes are more predictable, and it's worth the extra 20-30 minutes.
Oshawa Best realistic GTA-area option.
66% G2, 69% G. If you're willing to make the 45-minute drive east, Oshawa gives you noticeably better odds than any Toronto centre. Less congestion, more straightforward routes, and the pass rates prove it. A lot of GTA drivers make this trip on purpose and it pays off.
Burlington Best option for the west end.
70% G2, 69% G. Burlington is the standout for Mississauga, Brampton, and Oakville drivers. It has the highest G2 pass rate of any GTA-area centre on this list. If you're in the west end and you can make the drive, this is where you want to be.
Oakville Solid middle ground.
68% G2, 70% G. Oakville sits between Mississauga and Burlington and has strong pass rates for both tests. If Burlington slots are hard to find, Oakville is a great backup.
What actually makes one centre harder than another?
It's not random. A few things drive those pass rate differences:
Traffic volume. Downsview, Etobicoke, and Brampton put you in some of the GTA's most congested corridors during your test. More cars means more decisions means more chances to make a mistake under pressure.
Route complexity. Some routes have multiple lane changes, school zones, tricky left turns, and high-speed highway sections. Others are relatively straightforward residential streets. The routes around Burlington and Oshawa are just genuinely less stressful than downtown Toronto.
Timing. Even at a harder centre, booking between 10am and 3pm avoids rush hour traffic. A Downsview test at 8:30am is a completely different experience than the same test at 11am. Always check what slots are available in that window first.
Should you travel for your test?
If you're willing to make the trip, yes especially from Brampton, Mississauga, or the Downsview/Etobicoke area. The gap between a 58% and 70% pass rate is real. That's not marginal.
Here's a quick cheat sheet:
- East end of Toronto or Scarborough? → Metro East is fine, or push to Oshawa if you want better odds
- North York or York region? → Newmarket over Downsview every time
- West end, Mississauga, or Brampton? → Burlington is your best bet
- Oakville area? → Stay local, Oakville's numbers are solid
One more thing that matters more than the location
All the centre-shopping in the world won't save you if you show up underprepared. The single biggest factor in passing your G2 is the quality of your practice leading up to test day.
A good instructor doesn't just teach you how to drive they teach you how examiners think. What they're watching at intersections. How long to hold a shoulder check. Where most people quietly lose points without realizing it.
At Rydbie, you choose your own instructor based on real reviews from real students. You're not getting whoever's available you're picking the person who's actually helped students pass at your specific test centre.
